The Next Mile

Short-term Missions for the Long Haul

Making Disciples through STM

Easton's Bible Dictionary defines a "Disciple" as one who (1) believes his doctrine, (2) rests on his sacrifice, (3) imbibes his spirit, and (4) imitates his example.

Louis Rushmore states in  his article titled, "Definition of Discipleship", states that "True discipleship is maintained only by the divine authority of Christ (John 8:31) and not by the human authority (Matthew 15:9). Furthermore, effective disciples of the Lord are fruitful workers (Matthew 7:15-20; John 15:1-8) and good stewards (Matthew 25:14-30), who have anticipated and acknowledged the cost of discipleship (Luke 14:25-35)."

We cannot forget that relationship is fundamental to process of discipleship.  Becoming a disciple first requires a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  Then, God uses, personal relationships with others in the Body of Christ to facilitate the discipleship process.

Short-Term Missions can just be another program or process if we are not careful.  But, if we are intentional about relationship, we can witness transformation in the Goer.  In addition, we can be a part of someone practically taking The Next Mile in their spiritual pilgrimage.

To facilitate relationship, The Next Mile offers a Mentor Guide, which up to this point has only accompanied the Goer Guide.  Due to recent requests, we are making the Mentor Guide available as a stand alone resource.

Don't worry, it's not difficult.  Simply ask each Short-Term participant to select a Mentor who will pray, encourage, guide and listen to them.  Mentors are there during pre-field preparations, through prayer during the on-field ministry and once again there for re-entry to help process the experience.

Along the way, Mentors can help answer questions your Short-Term participants may have through authentic relationship.  The Mentor Guide is simple to use.  It is divided into five categories arranged in chronological order with space for Mentors to take notes.  Each section provides specific instructions to fulfill the Mentor's responsibilities  These responsibilities are to:  Pray, Encourage, Prepare, List and Report.
